musty pages
and dog-eared corners
of my life

stuck up on the shelf
kept to myself
but not tonight

and there's a thing or two
that maybe i could show to you
if i get over my fears and my pride

don't bend the pages
and don't mind the spaces
if i let you inside

you might find
that there's a page or two

that serves to remind
you of you

now i fancy myself of course
as poetry by robert frost
or maybe that book by thoreau

but reading between the lines
i'm certain that you will find
it's calvin and hobbs that steals the show

now my cover is a little worn
and some of these pages have been torn
and some days my spine feel broke

but there's plenty more pages
and all of the mistakes have been
marked by the editor's notes

you might find
that there's a page or two

that serves to remind
you of you

this much is clear
as i'm standing here
trying to get past this cover for you

stuck up on the shelf
stuck up on myself
afraid to admit the truth

that i'm so damn scared
that i'm not shakespeare
or hemingway

but i'm sure that there
is something in here
worth opening up for anyway
